If we have learned nothing from sports, and specifically from this year’s FIFA World Cup predictions, sports are unpredictable. Germany loses to Japan; Morocco beats Belgium; Saudi Arabia shocks Argentina; the Jaguars come from behind to upset the Ravens.
But now that the NFL season is done with November, and the next games will be played in December, it’s time to boldly predict what is going to happen between now and the Super Bowl in February.
The San Francisco 49ers continue to impress for the rest of the regular season, beginning with a huge win over the Miami Dolphins this week. That is their last significant hurdle in the regular season, and the 49ers win out, finishing the year with a 10-game winning streak and a 13-4 record.
The Eagles secure the NFC East, but not without bumps. They lose to the Titans this weekend, and they will lose to the Giants to end the season. But their win over the Cowboys on Christmas Eve secures the division and the top seed.
Minnesota is shocked by Mike White and the Jets this week, and they drop games to the Lions and Giants. At 12-5 they become the third seed in the playoffs, behind the Eagles and 49ers.
In an NFC Championship Game for the ages, Jalen Hurts plays as well as he has all season. But Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey also have huge days, and the 49ers win in the final minute of the game, going to their second Super Bowl in four years.
Kansas City loses a close game to the Bengals this coming Sunday, but the rest of their schedule is quite easy, and they cruise to a 14-3 record and yet another AFC West title. It’s their seventh straight and fifth in a row for Patrick Mahomes.
The Bills ever so briefly regain the top spot in the AFC, only to lose to the Dolphins and those same Bengals, leaving them with a 12-5 record to close the year, and a Wild Card spot. Miami, on the strength of their season sweep of Buffalo, wins the AFC East.
In the AFC North the Bengals rise with those wins over Kansas City and Buffalo, but losses to the Patriots and the Ravens in Week 18 leaves them at 11-6. Baltimore wins the tiebreaker and the division.
For the fifth time in five years the Chiefs host the AFC Championship Game, and they welcome back an old friend in Tyreek Hill. But it’s snowing and blowing, and neither offense is able to break free until Travis Kelce gets touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. Kansas City beats Miami, 20-13, and is back in the Super Bowl for the third time in four years.
The skill players show out for this one. Travis Kelce has a big game, Deebo Samuel scores a long touchdown, JuJu Smith-Schuster goes over 100 yards, and Christian McCaffrey gets a touchdown on the ground and through the air.
But in the end Patrick Mahomes is the difference. He leads Kansas City down the field for a late touchdown, and Jimmy Garoppolo can’t respond. The Super Bowl rematch between the Chiefs and 49ers ends the same way the first one did, with a victory parade in Kansas City.
