The Hog Indexes were shuffled up again this week, highlighted by the surge of a new team to the top on offense and a fall from glory for the champs; let’s take a look.
OFFENSIVE LINES: THREE UP
Seattle Seahawks: An unfamiliar face now tops the Index as Seattle ran rampant over the hapless Detroit defense on Sunday and moved up 11 spots all the way to the top. The Lion’s defense has been absolutely abysmal this year, but Seattle deserves credit for taking advantage and picking up the win. They aren’t a great offense, but they may just be competent.
Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs got back on track and moved up six spots as they went into Tampa Bay and got revenge for their Super Bowl loss. This offense is humming right now as Patrick Mahomes is getting everyone involved.
Houston Texans: The Texans lost again on Sunday but still climbed nine spots on the Index. They’ve generally been competitive and played hard again on Sunday, but have not been able to break through. Improved offensive line play would go a long way towards entering the win column, but a tough date with Jacksonville looms.
DEFENSIVE LINES: THREE UP
San Francisco 49ers: The Niners were already on top of the Index but deserve additional praise after they made the Rams look pathetic on Monday Night Football. They are allowing just 2.87 yards per carry, tops in the league, and looked completely unblockable. If the offense hits its stride, look out.
Cincinnati Bengals: Don’t look now, but the Bengals are 2-0 and will be right back in the AFC hunt if they can beat Baltimore in primetime on Sunday. They’ll need all the help they can get from this line which surged five spots after their win over Miami. Lamar Jackson and company pose a higher threat level, but the extra prep time should do the Bengals some good.
Washington Commanders; The Commanders came up short against Cooper Rush, but still ascended 11 spots on the Index. It’s a group with a lot of talent, but the offense will need to do more than it did Sunday to keep them in games.
LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING: THREE DOWN
Rams Offense: The Niner’s defensive line is excellent, and they were battling injuries, but that was a lifeless showing from the defending champions, who managed just nine points. They need to get healthier, but they also need to play better. Cooper Kupp is being asked to do way too much for this offense right now.
Cowboys Offense: Despite picking up a third straight win, the Cowboys dropped nine spots after an uninspiring showing on the ground. Dak Prescott’s return should be soon, and Michael Gallup is back in the fold, though, so this offense is still on the upswing long-term.
Buccaneers Defense: The Bucs slid back five spots as Kansas City poured it on them Sunday Night. They’ve battled injuries all year but at a certain point, need to actually play better to stay in the running for the top seed.
