If you are a fan of one of the four remaining NFL teams, we know who you are rooting for: Your team, and the team you perceive to be the easiest matchup.
For NFL fans who just want to see a good Super Bowl with good stories, there are reasons to hope for each of the possible four matchups.
They are the top seeds, and Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are the 1st and 2nd Team All-Pro quarterbacks. Offensively they are also the two highest-scoring teams in the league this season. What’s not to like about that matchup?
You also have the Andy Reid factor, who is now the first NFL head coach in history with 10 postseason wins with two different teams, the Eagles and Chiefs. He took Philadelphia to Super Bowl XXXIX, and a visit to the Super Bowl this year would be his third with Kansas City.
There are also the brothers Kelce, Jason, and Travis, who are both locks to make the Hall of Fame. And Mama Kelce, who has famously made same-day treks to see both of her sons play in their respective postseason games.
In Super Bowl LIV, the 49ers had a 10-point with less than seven minutes to play. They ended up losing to the Chiefs by 11 points.
Everyone who has ever purchased 49ers gear over the years would like revenge. It’s the Super Bowl that got away, and a rematch against Kansas City would be appealing for just that reason. San Francisco has also won 12 straight games leading into this Championship Sunday, with the loss before that streak began coming at home against the Chiefs.
Andy Reid is the resident offensive coaching genius, but what Kyle Shanahan has done with three different quarterbacks this season puts him into that genius conversation. How much fun would it be to watch them match wits for a second time in the Super Bowl?
The appeal to this game goes all the way back to when Jalen Hurts, and Joe Burrow met in the College Football Playoff Semifinals. Even though Hurts had been at Alabama for three years prior to his transfer to Oklahoma, he didn’t face Burrow head-to-head until this meeting between Oklahoma and LSU.
It did not go well for Hurts. He accounted for 260 total yards and two rushing touchdowns, and Burrow threw for 493 yards and seven touchdowns, winning the game 63-28, and going on to win the National Championship.
At the NFL Draft, a few months later, Burrow was taken with the No. 1 overall pick, and Hurts was drafted with the 53rd overall pick, well after Burrow. The Eagles want a Super Bowl win. Jalen Hurts wants to beat Joe Burrow.
We can assume that Joe Montana was destined to win Super Bowls with the 49ers, even without the Bengals being a part of them. But the Bengals were the opposing team for two, and perhaps the two that most defined Montana.
Montana’s first ring came at the expense of Cincinnati, 26-21, setting him on his path. And his reputation as the coolest two-minute quarterback in history came from his second Super Bowl win over the Bengals, 20-16. He led an 11-play 92-yard touchdown drive to win the game with a touchdown pass with 34 seconds to play.
The Bengals remain without a Lombardi Trophy in their history, and mainly because of the San Francisco 49ers. They have their own Joe Cool in Joe Burrow, and a Jerry Rice-like figure in Ja’Marr Chase. If this is to be their year, making it happen against the 49ers would be extra special.
